This week on All Night Jazz, we’ll focus on saxophonist Bob Mintzer. Born January 27, 1953, in New York, Mintzer studied early on with saxophone legend Jackie McLean. He later attended the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He got his first professional breaks in the big bands of Buddy Rich and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra.

After a number of years on the New York scene Mintzer joined the leaderless collective known as the Yellowjackets in 1990. The band, still working and recording today, has received 13 Grammy nominations, has been voted best contemporary jazz group almost every year in the jazz magazine readers polls, and continues to play major jazz venues all over the world.

Mintzer also has a close relationship with the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild in Pittsburgh where he records with various big bands and vocal ensembles.

We’ll hear the saxophone sound of Bob Mintzer all week long on All Night Jazz.
