WUSF All Night Jazz Focus Artist of the Week: John Coltrane
This week on All Night Jazz we celebrate the music of saxophonist John Coltrane , whose 94th birthday would have been September 23rd.
Originally from Philadelphia, Coltrane became a household name through his work with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. His innovative technique, dubbed “sheets of sound” by critics, took the tenor saxophone to new heights.
Throughout his career Coltrane defied expectations and consistently broke new ground with innovative recordings like “Blue Train” and “Giant Steps.”
His rendition of the Rodgers and Hart classic, “My Favorite Things,” set the standard for the relatively under-utilized soprano saxophone. His deep and meditative album, “A Love Supreme,” became a signature accomplishment.
We’ll hear the powerful saxophone sound of John Coltrane, all this week on All Night Jazz.
